The role of the Pathology Navigator performs operational support functions and manages workflow, to include but not limited to, the responsibilities and tasks listed in Position Responsibilities. The role is under the oversight of the Transfusion Medicine Supervisor. This critical role represents the Department of Pathology both intradepartmental and external to BILH-Mount Auburn Hospital clients and patients. Position Responsibilities include processing internal Pathologists consult requests to outside pathology departments, obtaining specimens, coordinating with Pathologists for testing kits and reference labs, completing requisitions and billing, packaging and mailing specimens, amending patient electronic records, opening incoming patient Cytology and Surgical consult material, preparing slides for clinical medical conferences, determining appropriate CPT/ICD10 codes and charges, processing add-on testing for Immuno-Histochemistry and Molecular Pathology, liaising with physicians on ordering and coordinating send out reference testing, managing addendums and scans for pathology reports, identifying and reporting problems affecting test performance, answering incoming calls and responding to requests from clients, physicians, and patients, managing fax transmissions, maintaining hospital standards of behavior, compliance with job description and policies, maintaining supplies, following safety procedures, participating in quality improvement activities, opening and distributing incoming mail, and performing other duties as required. Knowledge, skills, and abilities required include a minimum of a High School Diploma (Associate Degree preferred), medical secretarial training or laboratory experience preferred, excellent communication skills, medical terminology knowledge, excellent typing and computer skills, and teamwork orientation. Working conditions involve exposure to infectious diseases and chemicals, prolonged standing and walking, repetitive data entry, manual dexterity, and use of protective equipment. Mount Auburn Hospital requires all staff to be vaccinated against influenza and COVID-19 as a condition of employment.
